Typical prices
Ranges, not quotes. A quote depends on your room.
| Work | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| Annual service with flue gas analysis | £70 to £120 |
| Diagnostic visit, first hour | £70 to £120 |
| Diverter valve replacement | £200 to £400 |
| Expansion vessel replacement | £180 to £350 |
| Pump replacement | £200 to £400 |
| Printed circuit board | £300 to £600 |
| Landlord gas safety record with service | £100 to £160 |
Ask whether the diagnostic fee comes off the repair. Most firms credit it and the ones that do not should say so before they book the visit.
What moves the price
- The part. A thermocouple is a few pounds; a printed circuit board or heat exchanger is several hundred.
- Whether the boiler is still in warranty, which makes the manufacturer's engineer the cheaper route.
- Access. A boiler in a loft or a boxed-in cupboard takes longer to work on.
- Whether the system needs draining down to change the part.
- Parts availability for older or discontinued models.

What the money buys: diagnosing fault codes and lockouts.

Questions about boiler repair
What is a boiler lockout?
A safety shutdown after the boiler detects a fault, shown as a code on the display. Resetting it once is reasonable. Resetting it repeatedly is not, because the lockout exists to stop the boiler running in an unsafe state.
Is it worth repairing a boiler over ten years old?
Often yes, if the part is available and the repair is under about a third of a replacement. Once parts are obsolete or the heat exchanger has failed, the arithmetic turns.
