Cost guide

How much do toilets cost?

Fitting a replacement WC costs £150 to £350 in labour. A cistern repair is £80 to £180, and a wall hung unit on a concealed frame is £400 to £900 because the frame has to be fixed and boxed in.

Wall hung WC on concealed frame£400 to £900
Cistern repair, flush or fill valve£80 to £180
Move a WC within the same room£350 to £800
Macerator unit, supply and fit£600 to £1,100
Soil pipe connection alteration£200 to £500

Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the soil pipe before choosing a pan. That one dimension rules out most of the range and is the reason replacement toilets get returned.

What moves the price

  • Whether the soil connection and fixing centres match the old pan.
  • Close coupled against wall hung, since a frame has to be fixed to the structure.
  • Whether the WC moves position, which brings the soil run and its fall into the job.
  • Access to a concealed cistern for the flush valve, now and in future.
  • A macerator, where there is no gravity route to a stack.

Questions about toilets

Can I put a toilet anywhere in the house?

Only where the waste can reach a soil stack at the right fall, or where a macerator can pump it there. Regulations also require an unventilated WC to have mechanical extraction.

What is a weak flush caused by?

Commonly a partially blocked rim, a flush valve not opening fully, or a cistern water level set too low. It is rarely the pan itself.
